Protect Without Patents
Patents are EXPENSIVE, requiring the expenditure of relatively large amounts of resources, for a return of relatively little protection. Contrary to popular myth (perpetuated largely by people who profit from the patent processes), a patent is NOT the best way to protect your idea from theft. There is a better way, that is far less expensive, and far more effective. It requires only a certain amount of ingenuity and some common contractual terms.
A combination of corporate paranoia based on the fear of selling anything that is not patented, and the laziness of individual startup owners who take shortcuts on product development, means that if you have a manufacturing process that gives you a natural edge, serious competition rarely emerges, and when it does, it appeals to a target market that would not purchase regularly from you anyway.
There is definitely a trick to making this work well, but it can actually work better than costly patents.
